Packing for even a short vacation with little children can be a daunting task and today I want to share 5 ways to simplify this process. At the end of this post, you can grab a checklist that will help you to have it all “pulled together” with less stress and effort. If you like to travel like us, I highly recommend saving it in your Drive or DropBox. You can make a copy, fill it in on your desktop, but then see it on all your mobile devices while packing. For example, I have saved checklists for a weekend trip, 1 night away, 3 days trip, 7 days, 10 days, etc.
1. Sreamline your process
Divide your luggage into sections to streamline the process. Mark the sections on your phone or on the computer, so do it once and use it for every family vacation. Some examples:
- Clothes for kids
- Clothes for adults
- Travel Documents
- Meds for kids
- Meds for adult
- Baby gear
- Mobile and electronic devices
- Camera and accessories
- Toys and accessories
- Baby Feeding Supplies
- Toiletries and care
- Changing accessories
- For the Beach
- For work
2. Start with Priorities
Start with packing the most important things – like travel documents and meds. Check the tickets and any other essential essentials without which your family can’t travel. These are the items to start with as they are must-haves, and you want to be sure they won’t be forgotten. Leave clothes for the last – you can adjust the amount according to space left to fill in.
3. Choose outfits that you can easily mix and match
Plan the items you can wear for each day in advance. Choose those that are easy to mix and match or can be worn more than just one time. For example, a pair of jeans is easy to match with anything, and you can wear them 2-3 times changing the top. The same for denim shorts – they are a perfect daytime outfit that easy to match with any top or swimsuit. Use the same principle for choosing baby/kids items.
4. Do you really need it?
Ask this simple question before putting inside the luggage every item you pack. Maybe instead of 5 pairs of pants and 5 tops, you can pack 1 pair of jeans and 1 pair of pants, 3 tops, and 2 dresses, so you can have 2 complete outfits without need to add tops, and the jeans you can wear twice.
5. Make an “add later” list
Is there anything that needs to be washed, bought, reviewed, or issued before the trip? Make a list of these items and mark the deadlines not to forget to take care of this.
Grab a Checklist!
Here is a free checklist you can download, fill in, and customize. There are three pages- one is your adults, and the second one is for baby or kids, the third is “add later” section where you can list any other items you might need during the trip. Click on the icon below to download.
